Stickers on our PowerBooks
06:11 UTC » Hardware - Joi's Diary
As usual, there were a lot of PowerBooks at this conference. Interestingly, Esther Dyson, Lawrence Lessig, Bruce Sterling and I were the only people I noticed who had stickers on our PowerBooks. Other people who I know who have stickers on their PowerBooks are Mena Trott and Cory Doctorow. I wonder what this means? What do those of us who are willing to vandalize our pristine PowerBooks with stickers have in common?
Anyway, just an observation...

actually - 'tis done. I got the ball rolling...

Maybe you're the only ones who actually "own" your Powerbooks? I would, if it weren't property of the company, and if I weren't afraid the sticker would come off eventually and I'd be left with a sticky cover.
4- Hans Suter @ September 8, 2004 12:39 AM
where's the pic ? (the woman behind qwerty) :-)
5- Johndan @ September 8, 2004 12:51 AM
I like to think it's because I'm creative, but it probably has more to do with being bored. I have several stickers on mine, and I used a red sharpie to color in the apple logo on the top cover. (Now it glows red.)
My boss owns it, but they're pretty hands off and haven't commented on it yet.
6- Buzz Andersen @ September 8, 2004 1:40 AM
Maybe what you all have in common is that you're not too concerned about your Powerbooks' resale value :-)?
7- Josh @ September 8, 2004 1:51 AM
What Buzz said. I wouldn't dare put a sticker on my PowerBook a) because I think the original unadorned look for a PowerBook is so beautiful by itself, and b) my eBay resale value would drop like a rock! However else will I fund an upgrade to a new PowerBook when faster models come out? :)

I've always had sitckers on my powerbooks. but I've always had stickers on everything. Skateboards, Record holders, etc - however I don't have any on my new laptop - just haven't found the right one yet.

Just get some Goo Gone to remove the stickers before you sell it or give it back to the boss. I have no idea how it works but its gotten stickers off of everything I've tried it on.

One reason could be to tell the difference between powerbooks at events with a high powerbook to PC notebook ratio.
I bought a Dell snap-on for my latest notebook that changes the color for my latest notebook because everyone else in the company has Dells.
11- Bob @ September 8, 2004 5:42 AM
There's a sticker on my notebook (not a Powerbook) because of the time the guy ahead of me at airport security had exactly the same model Dell - and after putting our shoes back on, we wound up picking up each other's notebooks. Not a pleasant discovery in the hotel room halfway across the country that evening.

There's stickers on my 8 year old computer monitor (which is still going strong). Looks great.
13- ian grenn @ September 8, 2004 8:55 AM
so where are the pictures of stickers on laptopts then??

My Powerbook is less than a week old...nothing gets stuck on it until the 'pristine' novelty has worn off.
16- Thorsten Overgaard @ September 8, 2004 10:48 AM
Well, it is a design piece. Don't mess with the design.
(But some of the sticker are quite fonny though...)

Keep on bloggin'. Have a nice packet. Baby on motherboard.
18- Dav @ September 8, 2004 4:31 PM
So if you join that Flickr group, how do you actually add your photo to the group photo pool? It sure isn't intuitive.

@ September 8, 2004 5:24 PM
hey Dav, you have to join the group and then open up the 'organizr' - you can then simply drag and drop your images onto the right group. hth.
20- Hannes @ September 8, 2004 11:14 PM
In my opinion it's even more interesting, why so many PC-Laptops don't have stickers neither. Usually their designers know nothing about shape and grip and thus they can only get nicer with just anything on top.

The Nicks rule!
22- Adriaan @ September 9, 2004 12:50 AM
I don't want no stickers on my pristine powerbook, and speaking of stickers, how come there's none on your Maserati, Joi? ;)
23- sobe @ September 9, 2004 6:12 AM
I noticed at Wizards of OS in Berlin that Lawrence Lessig is having a huge Creative Commons sticker on his powerbook and thought it's a good ad for your company or organization when you do presentations at conferences. You just have to put it there the right way :-)
24- JY @ September 9, 2004 8:16 AM
Hey Dav, I was sure you would be there :-P
Here is Dav's ibook :

There are two types of Powerbook stickers too. One that just puts stickers somewhere, and the other that carefully positions the stickers to transform the glowing apple into some other glowing shape...
26- Al Abut @ September 9, 2004 11:38 AM
I put mine on my iBook after my friend recommended it for a very practical reason: it's supposed to reduce the chances of theft.
27- jeanpoole @ September 9, 2004 4:42 PM
Preferred spot for laptop stickers?
DIRECTLY OVER glow in dark logo...
black gaff tape is thick enough to block most light...
and if u carve holes in it cleverly u can transform that glow in the dark beasty to a skull or a pac-man etc...

if you have stickers on your powerbook/iBook then don't forget to join the Flickr group and add them there:
If you're not already signed up to Flickr then you should check it out anyway - it rocks...

Well, The votes are tallied Joi. You may not like the results but while some including myself would like to think that we put stickers on powerbooks because we are "creative" or perhaps because we see them not as simply an object unto themselves but love them as a "means to an end"... The truth is the predominent reason is because the sticker putter on'rs are "rich f-ckers" and everyone else is to worried about how much they paid or how much they can get upon resale / upgrade to go and defacing their really expensive toys by slapping stickers on them.
The truth hurts don' it? :)
Hey, if you don't like the answer then don't ask the question.
Ha! This is all in good jest. A little razzing.
BTW, I think i saw an interview with John Perry Barlow on Tech TV once upon a time and if my memory serves correctly he too was one powerbook toting sticker puttin' dude also. Gee, I wish I had that interview. Anyone?
31- mmeiser @ September 10, 2004 8:53 AM
just one wordz I'd rather be driving a mac
32- Thomas Rohde @ September 10, 2004 12:20 PM
Sometimes, when I eat an Apple, I take that little sticker that's on it (Braeburn or Fuji, for example) and stick it left or write of the trackpad. I've had up to 5 such stickers on my 17"er and all my Mac friends think I'm a heretic :-D
Cheers from Germany, Tom
p.s.: remove the DEVNULL from my email

Abe, really there are three types of stickers. The ones that put stickers somewhere, the ones who put them over the glowing logo and the ones like me who take the top metal plate off and put the sticker underneath the glowing logo. Something black esp. looks good in the dark with the light from the LCD glowing behind it.
34- Boris Anthony @ September 11, 2004 12:23 PM
Looking at the pics I notice some are also doing something I just recently had to do: putting a sticker below the keyboard, to the left of the trackpad... You know, where it gets super hot sometimes and if the environment is hot too, your palm gets sweaty and corrodes the paint/aluminum and you get these little black spots...
Way weird.
Also, stickering seems to fall into 3 categories (this from years of observing skaters/snowboarders/etc):
- brand/clan affiliation/identification
- "self" expression
- pure ornamentation
35- Rocco Caputo @ September 13, 2004 2:39 AM
Jesse Vincent stickers his Powerbook so he can spot it in a crowd. He's had one too many walk off at a conference and not been able to identify it by sight.
36- annielin @ September 17, 2004 11:45 AM
i don't have any stickers on my laptop, which is not a powerbook. BUT I HAVE A REALL COOL BURN MARK.
yes, i did light my laptop on fire.

rich f-ckers! LMAO
38- Sigi @ October 12, 2004 2:30 AM
I love my Powerbook like it is
39- Mary @ July 26, 2005 5:08 AM
I heard that if you do not want to get all the sticker goo on your laptop yet still have stickers on them, then to just put some adhesive cover on it. Frisket Film would do it. You need to look for the type that best fits your needs though.
40- ermeister @ July 27, 2005 3:16 PM
i now plan on putting a "japanese hacker" or "mac pirate" sticker on my 12" powerbook to hide a small dent caused by a dropped cell phone. at least this will ad character/style rather than an ugly dent.
41- J.Michael @ September 25, 2005 6:42 AM
I'm afraid stickers on my powerbook might take away from the Woz autograph :)
42- Ruth @ October 3, 2005 10:01 PM
I have my own artwork painted on my laptop :)

I have stickers on mine too. It's what *makes* it mine... We should start a flickr group to show off our masterpieces...
