Some notes from Colin Powell's talk.

Colin Powell is turning the weapons inspection debate around and is saying that Iraq needs to account for the anthrax, the mobile labs, the delivery weapons and other weapons that the UN knows that it had. There are no tell-tale signs of disarmament. Iraq need to account for the weapons. The inspectors can't be expected to find the weapons. "Iraq must participate in disarmament process or be disarmed."

"We will not shrink from war if that is the only way to rid Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction."

"United States has no intention of invading North Korea... At the same time, we keep all of our options on the table."

Powell, is a great speaker and very convincing. He should be the President of the United States. He made me feel more supportive of US actions with his remarks about the thought process behind his decisions.

Comment from a fellow GLT: "Maybe Bush made Powell say he wouldn't run for President since he is so much more eloquent and much more likely to be successful in creating partnerships in Europe that he would be a threat to Bush and undermine his power." Interesting thought. That may be true. If that is true, maybe Powell will run for President once it becomes evident that Bush will not be able to win the next election.

Bush didn't win the last presidential election - he was appointed in a judicial coup, so there is good reason to think he will be unable to win the next election.

Unfortunatly, as long as Bush beats the war drums it makes it pretty hard to think about unseating him. The US approval ratings are dropping due to the economy but are still high. Wars typically raise approval ratings due to hightened patriotic feelings etc.etc.. particularly for the right wing. It is sort of like Sharon in Israel.

Hmmm... I hear the anti-war movement is picking up momentum though. Any chance it will turn into a Vietnam sort of situation before the election?

Doubtful. I believe that President Bush will be in office for another four years. The comment previously made that Bush was not "elected" is not true. The election was so close that either side could have won. The US Supreme court stepped in when each vote would not have been equally represented. The decision about the inequality of the Activist Florida Supreme court decision was, I believe, 7-2. The "What to do about it" vote was closer. However, in general, I believe that the American People have been well-served by this man and will re-elect him. The Democratic party seems to be one composed of special interests... it used to be "the" party of minorities, but the Republican Party has been making inroads... witness the Estrada debacle. I believe that the Democratic Senate is in the process of marginalizing itself even further. The vote of the people basically stated: Get on With It... and the Democrats have become even more Obstructionist.

Bush will win. We can't underestimate the distaste the American West has for a Massachusetts democrat (Kerry). Not going to flesh out the argument, just assert.

However, won't it be fun to see Hilary Clinton and Colin Powell run against each other in 2008?!?! I look forward to Powell at a debate listening to some bull from HC, then calming stating: "Actually, I had an official position in the Clinton administration, and here's what happenend on...the non-war on terrorism...the fall-down in...etc."
