So, after a discussion about fair use and copyright, I decided to upload a short rant that I did on the panel in Davos about the Blueprint for Japan 2020 this year. It is a QT .mov file and is 4MB. It was taped from an NHK broadcast of a Davos special. The audio is stereo with Japanese on the left channel and English on the right.

Such a troublemaker ;-)

I'm really quite impressed by the statements made in this video clip. In the spirit of 'fair use' and 'blatant thievery' I've transcribed what was said for use in my own webpage. I hope no one will hate me for that. I currently live in Japan with practically zero working Japanese knowledge, so it's very nice to get this kind of commentary in a language I understand. Of course the argument could be made that even were I to understand Japanese there's no debate of this kind going on... =/

Haha. Thank you for your praise. ;-) Plotting the overthrow of the power elite in Davos and on TV is probably not the way they would have done it back in the old days, but I get a sense that I'm reaching more people who care, and that most of the powerful are so confident that they just ignore me... for the moment. ;-p

Wow. Having read some stuff that came out of Davos, that was very refreshingly honest. You're a mavrick, that's for sure, but I believe that's what's needed in todays environment: more intelligent people who are willing to take the risk of speak their mind honestly. Keep it up, Joi!

Uhhh... Wow.

Joi, I honestly can't believe that you were actually able to say this in such a high-profile situation. It's really amazing.

I imagine many stodgy types were squirming uncomfortably while you spoke. The image makes me very happy though... ;)

Like I said, I think most powerful are confident that I will fail. The people who go to Davos are mostly the enlightened elite who are actually supportive of my efforts. I think we offended a few of the bureaucrats and media types because we were a bit negative about the mass media and the bureaucracy... but I'm not getting nearly the backlash that I thought I would get... yet. I think it is MUCH more risky right now to say you are against the war in the US than to say you are against the LDP in Japan. ;-)

Mr Ito sounded like Karen van Wolferen there in the middle of the provided clip... Living in Tokyo 1992-2000 I was certainly able to see the "System" in operation, though not quite firsthand, alas.
