DECONversation / Maurice Benayoun and Steve Mann, moderated by Derrick de Kerckhove

Looks interesting. Someone go so we can heckle. ;-)

Brainwave Building Blog

Deconism Gallery/Arts Complex was designed as a blog --- something we call "buildinglog" (which, like cyborglog, abbreviates to "glog").

We've all seen smart buildings, smart lightswitches, smart toilets, and intelligent user interfaces, but what happens when you have "smart people"? What happens when you wire up the "intelligence" onto people?

2003 August 14th and 15th we explore what happens when the intelligent building meets intelligent occupants.

The August 14th event will be an intellectual discussion about the relationship between cyborglogs and buildinglogs. Three panelists (Maurice Benayoun, Pierre Levy, Steve Mann), moderated by the Director of the Marshall McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology, will enter an immersive multimedia space (a brainwave bath) while discussing the implications of thepost-cyborg age.

The August 15th event will be an actual collective (de)consciousness where the occupant-cyborgs interact with the building, to create an audiovisual experience from their brainwaves, as part of a brainwave (de)concert performed by jazz musicians Bryden Baird, James Fung, Dave Gouveia, Sandy Mamane, and Corey Manders.

I'm going... and so are you...

does this mean the hecklebot lives? when last i heard it was dosed with radiation or something to protect the speakers in coloradio....

Accordion Guy is going.

He's even going to try to get Steve M. in a hot tub.

*ZZZAT!* :-)

Adam, no.. Mann will already BE in the hottub... that's the schtick for this event...

Brainwave collectives would allow those in remote locations to participate over the net, especially for example, patients who are confined to hospital or hospice, so they could be part of the event, through brainwave collective. We're trying to hook up a Parkinson's patient to participate in this event, so if anyone's has experience with EEG in Parkinson's patients, it would be great if you could post some thoughts, ideas, etc., especially on how to solve electrode motion and EMG noise in the EEG.

Upon the roof at night
as gentle heat escapes into the wide expansion of the sky
and is swept up into the breeze of mind
memories of gaussian windows dark and reflective
slanted upon the unelectric thoughts of nature

sounds of silence
negated sounds of judgment
sonata and the unconcert nothingingness of brainwaves of the past
deceased artists visiting in the midst of the night

upon the roof at night
provoked Persians attack free men
united in nature
as sunken ships lay beneath the imagination
the triumph of free men

again the sounds of nothing upon the ocean of reflective windows of Gauss
and mathematic proglemata
as a time constrained Imannual Kant writes in the midst of the night
hearing old Bavarian clocks
shadows of candles lit

upon the roof at night
conversations of yesterday are floating in the universe
ever persisting brainwaves
lift the skin
ever so full of sweat

upon the roof at night
sands of a lake
stir in the corner and
flow from fingers
languages yet to be spoken

the sound of sand
alive

sand

sorry for the double post;

My father in law is the parkinson's patient we are going to try the brain wave machine on;

he does not have tremors

he is more rigid;

he does have a condition known as bradyphrenisia;

that is that thought are slow or delayed;

I happen to have a patient of Dr. Lazaro from University of Toronto medical center; he has an internal brain pacer for parkinsons; he is off all parkinsons meda 4 years after the surgery;

Deep brain stimulation from music and biofeedback?

look up elizabeth Gould; interestiung research about brain regrowth...

by the way, the poems reflect my poetic interpretation of the lecture at deconism

Silent roof alone
warm tar, wires warm {Betty's voice here}
electricity and sun
remain alone

An idea grows
keeping company a building {Benayoun's voice}
breathing street sounds
alive

Sounds
motorized metal
shadows of nature
sculpted hydrocarbons {Steve, your voice goes here}
solid and still
within the idea grows

Electronic muse singing sparks of freedom
silent muse: silent roof alone
sounds escape beyond street corners {Derrick's voice here}
and approach the horizon

A sky without sun
in summer coolness
the night that lives in the day {all read in unison to achieve a chorus and religious effect to tap into Apollo's Lyre}
silent roof alone.

its a matter of using the lesbeque method of translating the reimannian topology;

this implies a diagreement of paralell conjecture by appollonius and euclid; this crushes Imannuel Kant's theorums given his reliance on aristolian conjecture about geomertic ''truths''

if you page yourself to your beeper and time how long it takes with your cellphone, you could figure out not only your gps coordinatesbut also the distance of the satalite above you and the distance of the moon using non-eucledian geometry...it would be like hacking into the satalite above....

I guess nobody is listening...

all this is from reading intellegent Image processing by...;
I have yet to prove this but would make for an interesting project*

Stef-for a gps to work it generally needs 4 satellites to be received by the gps unit. The clocking used has to be to within a nanosecond accuracy for the trilateration calculation to work.

If you use a commercial paging network, for example, I have seen receive times on my pager vary from 30 seconds to minutes so that variable alone would throw off any calculations. But hey, if you have some time on your hands give it a whirl and see what kind of results you get.

if one looks at the streets in one neiborhood, one will see non biodegradable cigarrettes;

these cigartes float in the gutter section of the pavement and float into the sewage;

traffic flow patterns and street corners dictate if there will be a number of accidents on that corner over a year period.

the above two scenarios use math and statistics that can be applies to telecommunication systems within the hospital; error rates and time with patient outcomes can lead to improved health.

real time informatics on the prevalance of disease can help choice of treatment and lower overall mortality from either medical error rates or infectious disease rates;

Unfortunatly; exposing patients to the idea of survaillance of these factores makes them uncomfortable in that the opinion is that there is a type of ''big brother system evolving''

This is were undersanding shooting back comes in; with patient empowerment and learning to use smart mob technics, patients and families can participate in a team effort in patient care.

Many bizarre and crazy things happen when health care practicioners are sensory overloaded; the needs to be a factor of volunteerism injected into both the Canadian as well as the US health care systems.

Also the protection of human rights when patients no longer have a short term memory.

Profesor Mann's experience of assault in the airport is a very important event to understand; there is a phenomena, social, that persons are increasing their ability to commit agressive acts; this applies to airports as well as hospitals; persons are not aware of how we are interacting with authority via radio, internet, and TV. 9/11 has increased our capacity for tolerating privacy issues.

will post later more insights

the above are contextual to what Professor Mann is working on.

I will be attempting to have two patients participate with the cyborg band;

One with parkinsons;

the other with severe head injury.

both patients suffered from marginliziation when hospitilized and experienced the Tyrrany of the Mediocre. the idea of bringing down the white wall of silence in health care is complicated given the relationships created in the context of Medical Economics;

We all should be familiar with the 1960's experiment regarding authority and pain. The experiment regarding fake electric shock to a person in a room by a person not aware that the shock was fake demonstrates that persons will perform cruel tasks upon command.

We collectively need to think about how airports, hospitals, and nursing homes are behaving as entities.

Professor Mann rightly does not like the idea of this forum being refered to as a "Smart Mob".

The word Mob makes one think of criminality; such is the popular culture we are exposed to in terms of glamourizing tyrants.

Michiavellinism is real in this world!

One need to become familiar with both Dostevsky as well as Tolstoy to put this into further context.

Tolstoy was speaks with his written narrative about how the Russian responded to the invasion by the French.

Monge, a mathmetician, as well as LaPlace where mathmeticians that Tolstoy studied; these math ideas are hinted at in Tolstoy's quantum thoughts about masses and the idea of War and Peace. From the particular day in the life, to the forces of war and peace is the movement of the narrative.

Such narrative helps, in my opinion to percieve the mass movements of war that patients fight as they approach death in the nursing home or hospital. Such breaches of privacy in aiports, or even on the internet, that the battle for human identity in reaching the subconscious.

Look at your own musings; how often does one dream TV shows or advertising jingles; did anyone here see a dying patient remeber only Frank Sinatra and not the beloved husband upon a death bed.

On Doestevsky, he writes about the idea of Crime and Punishment.
His life experience is different from Tolstoys. He suffered from seizures his whole life and spent a considerable time in prison for ploting against the Czar. In prison, the insight of control and the relavent subject of Bentems ideas of the panopticon building of everyone whatching one another in terms of prison reform come to light within the written narrative of Dostevsky.

In the Bothers Karamatov, the idea of free will are within the chapter of the Grand Inquisitor. The idea here in this chapter are made reference in Eric Fromm's work "The Escape From Freedom."

Fromm's work talks about how German society, after world war one developed into the Nazi state.

It is my opinion that this work is very relavent to the discussion here in that the gradual acceptance of cruelty and neglect in our society.

One also needs to be fearful of Stalinistic Utilitarianism.

So to get back to what I am trying to say, "smart mobs in chicago" or anywhere else, should reconsider renaming and redirecting purpose to civic duty. We should worry about our world and the people in it and avoid absurdist protest replacing it with directed effort to protect not only our marginalized family members, but others within our electric village.

Blogging
to moniter patients rights and to help in a positive way our hospital and staffs is what is needed.

Eye Tap, wearable computers, AI, Intelligent building, ect are all meaningless without rigor of thought and effort; The quantum power of Shooting back will fall into Napoleonic hands and intentions much like the ideas of Monge and Laplace did...

We must become aware of the tyranny around us to shoot back. We must become aware of our own humanity and inperfection to fully integrate the power of cyborgism. We must Unite as cyborgs! Enlighted and educated against cruelty and injustice!
