President George W. Bush
President Signs Defense Bill REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT AT THE SIGNING OF H.R. 4613, THE DEFENSE APPROPRIATIONS ACT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2005

Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.

Ooops. A Freudian slip?

I doubt the slip was Freudian. It's very well known Bush isn't exactly a brilliant speaker. He fumbles his words, reverses sentence structure, and sometimes he's even been known to make some nonsensical statements. But is he an evil guy? I doubt it.

printf ("Litmus test for a viable Presidency is "

(words == involuntarily_blurted_out_nonsense ? "failed." : "passed."));

Did you make the same comments after Al's "I invented the internet" gaffe? Otherwise it's pure partisan spite Joi and as smart as you are about blogging and acknowleging that bloggers are human and make mistakes, you judge too quick I suspect. If it had been a blogger you would have ignored it, or not given it such attention.

Thomas, if you notice, I put it in the "humor" category. I thought it was funny. It's different than the Al Gore quote. People thought he really meant it and slammed him for it. I think this is different.

I don't know why people keep saying Bush "misspoke". Obviously, he didn't.

Kerry's acceptance speech was full of "Bushisms." My favorite was his "hair pollution" comment. The video is still available at c-span.org (also, search for "1971 interview" to see a younger Kerry, who definitely suffered from "hair pollution," as well as having an ultra Boston upper-crust accent he seems to have completely lost).

Seth. Yup. My point was that no one would really believe that Bush really meant that. I think the Al Gore one was worse because people thought he might have meant it. Speaking of hatchet jobs, I think the majority of American's still don't know that Dean's "scream" was really a technical problem where the microphone only picked up his voice trying to shout over the crowd. The networks reported this and apologized, but I doubt anyone was listening.

I think cheap shots that are cast as jokes are not nearly an damaging as those which are portrayed as serious.

Yes, Al might have believed it, but I doubt many others did. The Bush statement or gaff or however you choose to characterize it might leave one wondering. I know it leaves me wondering. No, scratch that, I'm beyond thinking Bush has a conscious which could betray him in such an admission.
