As some may have noticed, Boris and Ado (he doesn't have a very good sense of humor, but he tries) are fiddling with including my the recent songs I've played on my sidebar taken from my last.fm profile. I've turned scrobbling on so that it picks up the songs I'm playing now. When I'm scrobbling, I realize that I skip stupid songs so they don't end up in my profile. Now I have to take a shower. I'm going to leave iTunes on in shuffle mode. I sure hope it doesn't play anything too stupid or embarrassing while I'm away.

I've noticed myself exhibiting the same "skip-the-lame-songs" behavior. But I figure we're all allowed to have guilty pleasures.
Maybe that could be an additional feature for last.fm - the ability to flag songs as "guilty pleasures" so no one is misled into thinking you actually listen to them for their artistic merit.
or lack thereof? ;)
C'mon guys! Are you really so ashamed of what you listen to? It's a matter of personal preference, no?
Besides, modifying your behavior out of fear of what others may think... isn't that peer pressure? ;)
Dude, "Art of Trance" after "Kraut" by KMFDM? That's like having a root canal after the best meal on the planet.
You can actually go to last.fm and delete songs from your profile, but probably not from your recently played...
Jonas, like I said... shuffle. I better start making some playlists...
Make a playlist called "stupid songs" and add all the music you're embarassed about like that secret copy of 'The Chipmunk Song' by Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Then make a smart playlist which includes the term "playlist is not stupid songs" and listen to this new smart playlist instead of your entire library.
Shouldn't "Just like honey" link to here
http://www.last.fm/music/The+Jesus+and+Mary+Chain/_/Just+Like+Honey
Instead of here

I wish last.fm could find the time to improve their RSS :(
Actually, last.fm and Musicbrainz are working together to try to think about how music permalinks should work.
Very annoying that there's no audioscrobbler for musicmatch...musicmatch has had a (proprietary) service very similar to last.fm and audioscrobbler for a while, with a presumably much bigger user base. But it's not open for public participation.
Hrm. Now last.fm is providing the only function iTunes didn't, and Musicmatch is faced with free, good alternatives for every feature it offers.
I admit to keeping a folder called GP.No.log and exclude it from Audioscrobbler (in Winamp). It only has a handful of songs, but since I normally listen to whole albums I didn't want a couple of pop singles to skew my data.

This is a great idea Corey.

I've been doing that ever since using the iTunes plugin for iChat. I took a lot of heat early on for some of my "guilty pleasures", so I then started to maintain a playlist with whole (and wholesome) albums in case I'm away for extended periods of time... then I realized how stupid that was, since I don't really care what people think of the music I listen to.
Besides, there is absolutely, positively, nothing wrong with Banarama.
My 2 year old "drifted" my profile when she played the entire soundtrack to Disney's "Pinocchio." I guess it's only a matter of time before someone spoofs their way into a neighborhood before dropping their mask to play a bunch of incongruous music just to fool with everyone's audio stream.
I'm shocked that I subconsciously corrected that into "Bananarama".
Joi, do Boris and Ado have the script you used for parsing the last.fm info available? I'd like to see how they did it... I've been reading up on Flash's XML parsing abilities, and I was thinking that it would be cool to make a little Flash ticker for websites that shows their last.fm playlist...
Also, it would give people without PHP on their server accounts a chance to use something like this...
"cam c.": I'll blog about my script soon.
I'll freely admit to playing Bachman Turner Overdrive right after Joy Division.
Adriaan... cool... I'll be watching... I started reading your Blog after Joi linked to you in this article.
"cam c." See http://blog.kung-foo.tv/archives/001220.php.
hey!
Cheeky request but can you help me?
Trying to get this script working on my site. Seems to work partially but won't write the artist name and track to the .txt file.
my server seems to have a problem with the script at line 72:
return "$artist
“$song”";
any help greatly appreciated
