I'll be giving a talk today at the SDForum in Mountain View. This section is called: Virtual Worlds---The Rules of Engagement.

My talk is 4:00pm - 4:45pm Keynote - The Future of the Metaverse

Not sure exactly what I'm going to talk about, but I'll probably be bopping around IRC, Second Life and World of Warcraft so maybe see you in one of the places or at the conference.

Joi,

I've recently read an article about virtual prostitution in Second Life in one of the major French newspapers [1]. It's in French, so unfortunately you probably won't be able to read it. It mentions the site Sl-escorts that lists escort secrives available in SL.

By any measures this seems to be a rather minor phenomenom, so it probably tells more about the shrewdness of the French (I'm one :-) rather than about second life itself. It raises some interesting questions though, which Linden Lab are apparently taking quite seriously: Are virtual activities that would be illigal in real-life allowed in a near-replica of the real world? The article mentions the case of "virtual child abuse" where two consenting adults play one a child and one an adult and engage in "virtual sex". This can probably be extended to non-sexual crimes I guess.

I was a member of SDForum in the early days (1984~?) when it was called SEF (Software Entrepreneur's Forum). Not sure what that means though. /lol

Joi- are there any examples of virtual soccer that provide immersive user experiences? I would think w/ the World Cup 36 days away there would be something fairly huge going on in that space... thanks!

Wow! My neighborhood. I like to come and hear you speak. I attempted to register. Registration is closed. $150 at the door. I'd love to see you again, Joi but not $150 worth.

Maybe next time.

Aloha

Mr. Ito, it was cool that you were hanging out with the SL hoi polloi on Sheep Island. I thought it was a fascinating blend of virtual and real space conferencing.

It was definitely a lot of fun. ;-)
