Not only for toothing but for swapping phone numbers, data, pictures without going through the carrier (DoCoMo, AU, JPhone) and saving you money.

This is probably the reason for not having bluetooth here in Japan as the mobiles are controlled by the mobile carrier companies and they can squeeze some more yen out of you.

But it has always amazed me why the same handset in the GSM world can have bluetooth and here in Japan it is not available.

AU used to have a Sony mobile that had bluetooth but that was dropped quite a while back. If you look at Sony Ericsson International and Japanese web sites - the international mobiles are quite considerably better than the domestic Japanese models.

One day we'll have bluetooth on mobiles here in Japan! Sigh

Hmm, Bluetooth as a building block of a random proximity-based social relations builder. I like the idea :-)

Methinks somebody should come up with a standard "personality descriptor string" to be exchanged by Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones.
You'd use a web site to answer some well-designed questions to probe your personality, and a 100-byte code string derived from the items you are partial to -- e.g. Thelonius Monk, Woody Allen movies, Kirkegaard, Calvin&Hobbes, Bach, sushi, biking -- would be returned.

That string, installed in your Bluetooth phone, would be broadcast when another BT device became visible, and your phone would automatically compute a "personality compatibility" figure.
If a user-settable mutual threshold compatibility value -- say, 90% -- was detected, the BT devices would exchange a user ID, which could then be used on a specific website to anonymously relay e-mails.

Wouldn't it be fun to walk around in the city, and, a few days later, to find in your phone a few user IDs of singles with good potential personality/likes/hobbies compatibility, with whom you could subsequently anonymously exchange e-mails if it struck your fancy ?

The business model could be based on the subscription payments collected from the users who got an user ID, did the personality test, and wanted to exchange protected mails via the web site with the potential matches their phones collected.

let me say... i would like to live in japan and use YOUR PHONES .... in taly 3G networks are only a very small percentage... alla phone have max a VGA camera
we pay ca. 4 € (5$) for a 1 MB of data transferred with gprs or umts
if you want to download a log or ringtone you have to pay 2 or + €.
"I-mode??? what is I-mode??".. yes a carrier launched this service... but is too expensive and offers no interesting services...
yes bluettoth is still interesting.. but our mobile networks aer very ugly :)
