Our World of Warcraft guild has been running Molten Core (one of the end-games) on weekends. We now have a fairly reliable turnout of 40 people for the raids and have started making progress with the bosses. We cleared Lucifron, Magmadar, Gehennas and just took down Garr. (smallish mov / bigger avi / 270MB hi-quality mov) It took us a few tries and isn't as easy (especially the setup) as it looks in the video, but it should be pretty easy from now on. We seem to have our communications and planning relatively organized now and with the help of some of the more experienced players should be able to keep moving until we hit a boss that requires us to get new gear. What is interesting to me about these raids is the combination of preparation, planning and real-time coordination necessary to execute properly and I imagine how these skills could be used for conducting other sorts of activities.

Congratulations. Garr is a tough fight. The more warlocks you have the easier it gets!
Good job! I know what a challenge he is compared to getting there... Teamwork ... all about knowing your job, and getting it done.....
Baron should be easy once we get used to the rythm which is, eh eh eh eh eh eh echu!
Slashar is The Bomb
Wonderful! I just got attuned for MC, but I think I'll have to miss my own guild's next run.
I do love being a druid -- even with about 5 deaths on my part, my attunement run took only an hour.
I seem to have trouble with audio on Google Video. Is it working for everyone else?
Joi you keep saying "What is interesting to me about these raids is the combination of preparation, planning and real-time coordination necessary to execute properly and I imagine how these skills could be used for conducting other sorts of activities." or the like.
Are you sure your not just trying to justify your WOW habit ;-)
Thomas: Never! ;-)
Congratulations on your progress. Garr is definately a step up in terms of the setup and execution needed. You'll find a lot of the later fight (Sulfuron, Majordomo especially) will stretch those skills.
In terms of equipment - you may need to work on FR before you get to your next boss, since your next group of trash mobs is lava packs. Aim for 235 FR for tanks, 200 for rogues, 150 for everyone else, and throw your paladins in groups with your melee. Here's an excellent guide to pre MC quest/drop/craft FR items.

Ok, practical stuff aside: I've been thinking about the skillset that WoW develops as well. Not just in the execution side, but been pulling more abstract management skills (setting missions for individual debates on things like a loot system) into play that have made such raiding guild challenges run a lot more smoothly.
It really is like a cross between a manager and a sports coach job. And yeah, I've applied the things I've learned in reverse - bringing tricks I've learned in WOW back to the meeting room. I guess one thing that WOW does is provide instant feedback on what works and what doesn't. I don't have to wait 6 weeks to find out if X approach worked in Y case, since we find out in about 10 minutes.

Joi,
How do you balance playing WOW with all the other things you have going on in your life? Especially with the length of time it takes to complete chain quests and raid. I know you tout WOW for its social aspect taht tranlats to the business world, but how do you keep from getting addicted to it?
Best Regards,
Gamewise, Majordomo will be the next big challenge in terms of coordination and communication. This fight really is a level above Garr. The gear problem will only become apparent at Ragnaros, which is basically limited by time. It requires enough DPS to get Ragnaros down and enough fire resistance not to die early. But congratulation on Garr! The next three shouldn't be too hard.
From a guild perspective, I've seen some guilds really get into problems when MC is mastered and you start BWL. BWL is more difficult and will have evenings with only wipes. Trying to get 40 people to sign up, where the outlook is just 15 gold in repair costs, is where leadership will really start to shine. This is where you need more motivational leadership, compared to the very hands on raid leadership, and day to day guild management.

He *is* addicted, don't you see it?! :)
A better question may have been how do you manage your wow addiction, while still making time for your other endevours?

The trick is to make WoW part of your job.
I thought about working for blizzard, but my wife is horrified by the idea. Sigh :-|
I think I will start a non-profit to fund myself and my guilds ability to play WOW Full Time :-)
Eww, you're a gnome. :-)
We play "The Garr Game" in that room. It's very easy: when Garr is killed and we're cleaning up his guards, we get exploded by the last one on purpose. The one who lands nearest Garr's corpse wins.

Lol! This is a pretty nice idea !!!
