My old buddy Tomo from Jr. High (we used to throw parties together in Jr. High) runs a bar in Harajuku called Moda. I haven't DJ'ed for awhile, but I've decided to try messing around a bit. I'm going to be DJ'ing from 8pm until around 10pm this coming Wednesday so drop by if you want to hang out and see me try to DJ. There's no cover charge. He has a web page.

suggested play list:
- Planet Claire - B-52's
- Hella Good - No Doubt
- Get this party started - Pink
- I want you to want me - Letter to Cleo
- Hey Ladies - Beastie Boys
- I'm so in love with you - Al Green
- Friday I'm in Love - Cure
- Scarey Monsters - Bowie
The beat don't till the break of dawn...
Marc. I heard from Barak that you can REALLY SING. That's what I want to hear dude. Was planning on playing the B-52's, Beastie Boys, Al Green, The Cure, Bowie already... ;-)
I smell a theme party a brewin...
Hey Joi,
Ever since I started working back in
92, I've been told by a bunch of people
that I should meet you since we have a
lot of things in common, i.e. bi-cultural, DJing, net-related jobs, etc. May not make it out this Wednesday, but hope to meet you soon in person.
Hey Koich would be nice to see you.
I'd have to suggest March of the Pigs by Nine Inch Nails for a pick me up but that's just me. And as far as the B52's go, "Strobelight" or "Private Idaho" are much better. Most people would rather puke up a spleen than hear Planet Claire one more time before the afterlife. Even Roam would do. But then again my best friend of 10 years is the biggest B-52's fan on earth so I've had it shoved down my throat for YEARS. If you want a B-52's feel without the baggage go with the Rezillo's and 'Flying Sucer Attack" or "Destination Venus". Ok. I'll go now :-)
OK... so you want some more of my playlist?
Skinny Puppy - Tin Omen
South Park - Merry Fucking Christmas
Butthole Surfers - Tiny Rubberband
Dr. Hook and the Medics - Spirit in the Sky
Underworld - Born Slippy
Uberzone - Faith in the Future
Iggy Pop - Nightclubbing
Schooly D - Saturday Night
Just some stuff I've listened to today. Pretty random. ;-p
Excellent, I now know what to do wednesday night...
Hi, Joichi-san!
Your information "DJ'ing at MODA in Harajuku" surprised me because this morning one of my friends asked me to go to a bar for a drink and playing darts tonight. What a coincidence! The bar mentioned by my friend was MODA! I heard that the owner has graduated from Sophia University the same as I have, and he should be your old pal "TOMO."
Also, I live the area behind the bar. It takes just a couple of minutes to walk from MODA to my house.
Anyway, thanks for the information about your DJ'ing on this Wednesday. I'll definitely drop by and enjoy your DJ'ing!
MASAKI (^_^)v
Ok, You get mass points for Skinny Puppy. My best friend Mike is friends with Tim Gore who did most of the Skinny Puppy props and his house is populated with several unique SP gems. Also the Iggy and Butthole surfers get much props. We are on the same page. I should have known from where you DJ'd here in my hood. I'm going by there on Thursday btw. Anyone you want me to say hi to for ya? So when's the musical geek partay? I'm up for some punk rawk karaoke and I want to see Canter sing!
Uh oh. That's the same night at the Japan Webloggers meetup. That's also the night when I am moving apartments...can't be in 3 places at the same time :(
My playlist would include:
William Orbit - Like Water From a Vine Leaf
The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds
BT - Blue Skies (Delphinium Days)
EbtG - Missing (Todd Terry Remix)
Rob Dougan - Clubbed to Death (The Matrix soundtrack)
Ian Pooley - What's You Number (Jazzanova Renumber)
Gabriel Rene - "Don't You Cry" (OM Records)
Deep Dish - The Future of the Future (Stay Gold)
Adam F - Circles
Rabbit In The Moon - Out of Body Experience (Original)
Monday Michiru - "Sunshine After The Rain" (MAW remix)
Cesaria Evora - Sangue De Beirona (Francois K Remix)
Beth Orton - Central Reservation (Spiritual Life/Ibadan Remix)
808State - Pacific 212 (I have an incredibly rare DJ promo of this one!)
Kyoto Jazz Massive - Nacer Do Sol
Jazzanova - Fedime's Flight
Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy
...but of course not necessarily in that order...
My vinyl arrives in Tokyo in early May :)
Gen
Totally forgot about the meetup. Hmm... What time is it and where? Can you guys come to Moda afterwards?
Jason. If Joe S. is there, say "hi" for me. Any of the Smart Bar old-timers should know me. I don't know who's there now... Actually, I was wearing my Smart Bar jacket yesterday...
Smart Bar! Metro! Oh man - it sounds like it's time to get stupid again. I used to totally hang at Wax Trax, Metro - back in the day.
Joi - maybe you remember TEDKobe - when I did an operatic/punk karoke version of "My Way"? Slamming heads at that coference was fun. Richard Saul Wurman still talks about it.....
... and just for the hell of it, after you finish your DJ set, you should play some BoA. :)
(casually walks away to avoid flames)
Marc. Dude. I didn't know you went to the Metro! I used to spin records there sometimes. Mark Stephens, who was the head DJ was my buddy and he taught me the ropes. I also used to spin at the LimeLight. I dropped out of college and lived in the club scene for a short while. I also helped Wax Trax in Japan when I moved to Tokyo and did a bunch of promotional things. I ran a few clubs in Japan including one where a few of the Smart Bar/Metro staff came and worked in Roppongi. ;-)
Actually I didn't go to TEDKobe... I guess I missed it.
Hey Ernie! Welcome. Love your site. Was one of the first blogs I thought was really funny. Found it on Umamitsunami. So... What's BoA? Is it the British Orthopaedic Association?
Tomo just made a flyer for the event. I forgot that the other thing we did together is we were in charge of the Jr. High darkroom together. I guess he has some old pictures of me. ;-p
BoA=Black Oak Arkansas?
Joi, the blogger meetup is at Zest, Jingumae 6-7-18, Tokyo,
on Wednesday, April 16 @ 7:00PM
Totally boss flyer! ~ linking to it, gettin' jiggy on Mediaburn.
Dude, you don't know who BoA is? 16 year old Korean pop-star that has had a string of pop-hits in Japan. Really really really damn catchy, although I suggested that you spin that at the club for the irony factor.
