Flash Mobs Take Manhattan
Very cool social hack. Time sensitive. Check it out.

Would there be a point to this flash mobbing?
This is so off the wall it's genius. I love this kind of thing...
I wonder how long before this kind of organised gathering is stamped on by the authorities? I believe there is already a law in the UK that could be used to prevent (or at least disperse) this type of thing...
And, who needs a point? For me the point is just that we can...
This boggles the mind. It reminds me of Critical Mass where all the bicyclists get together a semi-organized form of manner. The sad thing is that there is so much potential for abuse here (maliciousness, marketing)that if it catches on we can get used to seeing lots of flash mob spam to the point where it's all ignored again. And it could also be construed as a tearoryeast (phonetic to avoid crawling) tactic.

Done! Sort of... with a twist.
We should plan one during the moblog conference.
count me in for the tokyo one... although doing a flash mob in Shibuya is sort of besides the point (theres always a mob of people there...)
doing one (or a rolling series of them) for the 1mc would be superb.
although, wouldn't we be getting dangerously close to the whole thing becoming 'art' then...
Two unique sets of photos,

Technorati has several interesting inbound links for those URLs as well. Be kind.
Boris: the Matrix gathering is inspiring, indeed, but apparently only fit
for besuited males with sunglasses :-) The flash mobs should embrace a
larger constituency, including perhaps even ladies.
I'm wondering whether the people all over Japan watching the 7 o'clock morning
NHK news would notice anything out of the ordinary if they saw a large crowd at
the Shibuya crossing at such an early time. A predictable view of Shibuya,
presumably taken with a fixed camera, often features in the short weather report
segment at the end of the 7 AM news. Maybe the TV watchers will just think that
Tokyo is a city of early birds :-)
Anyway, I like the idea of having a mass media channel to inadvertently broadcast
the flash mob's picture. But to achieve that we need to find a location that
is predictably featured on national TV channels...
just heard about this flash mob...and am really keen to do this in tokyo.
a few non-political, non-art, non-threatening and non-sensical ideas:
1. A kazoo band playing `take the A train` on the Yamanote-sen
2. Singing the `Yaki-mo` song at the New York Grill
3. Walk down the up escalators at the Marunouchi building...then, up the down escalators...then down...then up...
4. Converge on the Yoyogi-koen pond or Ueno Zoo chanting `Tama-chan`.
5. Meet at the Mitsukoshi in Aug. wearing parka, scarf, hat and gloves exasperated how cold it is outside!
in any case, i`m in...
I want this to start up in San Francisco. In Union Square would be perfect ot meet and start clapping, hugging, then leave peacefully so the pigs have no reason to act a fool. Share Love not Hate!

i just moved to manhattan and my girlfriend in france told me about the mobs. how do you get in on this!!?!?
Is it any wonder these meetings look like idiotic geek fests. Get lives for Gods sake! Or better yet: Go do it in France...and don't come back.
I love this!
it's lunacy! I know some schmuck in Washington will make a law outlawing such a gathering in mass, but i want info. I'd like to start sumthin in Austin, Texas, home of Bush, that sorry son of a ....
contact me please
You should call them flash "moms" instead of flash "mobs". I think it might be less threatening.
Well as a hick here in Montana, I've only just recently read about this and I laughed my a-- off!!!!! i love it and I also worry that some smuck will try and out-law it. However!! if it could be a proven form of art it probably couldn't be touched, as long as it remains peaceful. Who cares what it's called as long a folks can still do it!!!!??I'm 44 and I'd do this in a heart-beat!!! Keep up the good work!
i heard that a flash mob was planned for Dublin the weekend of the 9th, 10th and 11th but cant find out when or where does anybody know

Hello all! I just heard about these gatherings on the news. It looks like alot of fun! I'm a student in Atlanta, GA, and I WANT IN!!! Plz contact me.
With all of the positive things that a group of people could do in the world as it is today, instead of Flash Mobbing in meaningless ways, why not flash mob in a way that helps people in need.
I'm sure that each person involved would go home that night with a very strong feeling of accomplishment rather than wondering if they had sufficient "fun" doing something absolutely meaningless.
I call on you people out there who are into flash mobbing to suggest to the leaders of your group how wonderful and important flash mobbing to clean up some filth somewhere or to take lonely seniors out for a walk or mass volunteering to help kids in some way.
Can you all imagine how incredible it would be to do these mob scenes to help people in some way? This could be one of the most positive things to ever be invented!
you're not the first one to think of the flashmob + altruism combination. i heard they did one in Birmingham to donate clothes to the Salvation Army. i'm thinking of something along the lines of giving food to homeless guys in a park, and you wouldn't have to sacrifice any of the randomness/spontaneity/insanity b/c you could sing or dance or shout or whatever at the same time. or yeah, cleaning up trash would simple and wonderful too. and best of all i love the nhk morning news idea!
basically, we have to do this. i've been looking all over the net for info on flashmobs in Tokyo, but all i can find is stuff about the Matrix offs and smart mobs, which are completely different. so, does anyone know if a flashmob has been done in Tokyo before? more important, does anyone know of a planned one anytime soon? or at least where i can find some more info?
i've always wanted to do something like this, ever since i was inspired by the Reclaim the Streets parties in the UK, and also by this one time when my friend & i were in Shibuya & accidentally started a mini-mob chasing this poor man through the streets b/c we convinced them he was David Beckham. (sorry man.) so, is anyone going to help me out or should i just start trying to organize this on my own???

Hello to all,
sorry, thisis the 1st time I join internet discussion.
I have been working for a Japanese multinational company from the age of 33 and now (I am 51) I am realizing the company has been exercising a very refined type of mobbing against me because it seems they have to reduce staff over 45 and they want reorganize the european operations.
I would be glad to know the situation of other people working for the Japanese. Thanks in advance.
think the Japanese corporations are the champions of mobbing.
Yes I have heard alot on mob life alot say they are just for a man. They would hurt a woman in a hurt beat. Is this true.
