The test: Connect to a low-power Bluetooth cellphone from a distance of 1 kilometerThe result: Success!
...With a slight cable modification, this test shows that, based on previous research in the area, bluetooth functions (and exploits) can now be performed from distances thought to be impossible.

Well, it's the laws of physics. Even low power transmissions of less than 50mw can travel a very long distance in free air (i.e, without obstructions) and can be picked up if there isn't any interference from other 2.4GHz-emitting devices.
I would think you would have to point the antenna pretty accurately.
BFD -- with 802.11 I don't have distance limits because of this thing called the Internet.
Bluetooth can't do that because it just links two devices next to each other because it's vertical stack is the anti-Internet.
It's like saying you can shout loud enough to be heard a km away. Impressive but I'd rather use Skype.
ah, there was a talk on similar Bluetooth subject at BlackHat Briefings day before yesterday. presenter said a simple hardware hack attaching high gain antenna gives bluetooth chip so much extesive reach. cuz most of Bluetooth chips have fairly strong transmitter inside.
but this might have a negative side effect for some people who like to do "toothing".
Er, an important application of Bluetooth is to wirelessly connect a laptop computer or a PDA to a GPRS or 3G phone to access the Internet :-)
