CBS NewsSpanish clerics issue fatwa against bin LadenLast Updated Fri, 11 Mar 2005 10:34:46 EST
CBC NewsMADRID - Clerics representing the majority of Spain's one million Muslims have issued what they say is the world's first fatwa against Osama bin Laden.
The edict by the Islamic Commission of Spain, which represents about 70 per cent of the approximately 300 mosques in the country, called bin Laden an apostate and asks Muslims to denounce him.
The Spanish ruling is nothing new. Osama bin Laden, Zarqawi, etc. have long been condemned by virtually all the mainstream scholars as heretics. Here's an article ("Bin Laden's violence is a heresy against Islam") from the October 15, 2001 of Britain's Daily Telegraph by a well-known Muslim scholar on bin Laden and his henchmen from the view of orthodox Sunni Muslim law, which speaks for about 90% of the world's Muslim population.
Hopefully this fatwa will be of more sincerity and longevity than this administration's vow to hunt down and capture the same OBL.
Zarqawi's been a convenient enemy, no? In a Feb. 6, 2003 Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Senators Biden and Hagel talked to Colin Powell about plans to take out a terrorist camp in U.S. -controlled northern Iraq a year before the war. They knew that Zarqawi was operating out of that camp. Three times the Pentagon presented plans to the adminsitration before the Iraq war, and three times they were turned down. Powell refused to discuss this in an open hearing. And of course Zarqawi got free, and he's the new public enemy #1. It didn't have to be that way, but it is now.
"Hopefully this fatwa will be of more sincerity and longevity than this administration's vow to hunt down and capture the same OBL."
Ruth,
You are such a jackass. Do you need press updates every 5 minutes or everyday before you have your cup of coffee? Just because it isn't blasted on the news doesnt mean it's not being done. I swear there are so many fucking idiots out there. Yes you!
